Olga Makharinsky

- Founder

Olga completed her higher education in Russia in the late 80s at the cusp of great social and political change. After finishing the Moscow Physical-Technical University, she worked at the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Science. She subsequently continued her studies for a PhD in the department of Systems of Automatic Designs at the Institute of Civil Engineering in Moscow. Upon emigrating from the Soviet Union with her family, Olga decided to change her professional line of work to allow her the time to raise 4 children.

Spending time with her children at home, Olga had the chance to explore and learn about several fields, notably holistic styles of living and history of art. By the time that they were all spending a significant amount of time at school, Olga decided to devote herself to charitable work. This idea had been brewing for some time, and Olga’s first large-scale experience was becoming a co-director, alongside her close friend Elena, of the English branch of the international charity Diema’s Dream. Inspired by the warm response of the Russian London community to their charitable appeals related to the wellbeing of Russian children, Olga and Elena decided to found and register the independent fundraising organisation Chance for Life in 2010.

During its years of activity, Chance for Life has organised a huge variety of events, ranging from large-scale fundraising balls and concerts, to more intimate fundraising lectures and meetings. The organisation began its mission raising funds for the social and educational need of unprivileged children in Russia, including several notable projects in conjunction with Russian orphanages. It has recently evolved to encompass children’s grave medical needs too. Chance for Life is extremely proud to have fundraised a substantial amount during this period, as well as to have collaborated with so many dedicated, passionate, and hard-working organisations.

Olga and her husband Leonid both have a sincere love of classical music. They are happy to support philanthropic programmes, as well as to take part in the organisation of music-related enterprises. The relationships that they have with the Southbank Centre, the LPO and the ROH are particularly cherished and bring them both a great amount of satisfaction.
